Why “first & then” matters
'First' and 'then' are quiet superstars. They organise everything a child will ever explain — how to make a cake, what happened at the park, why the tower fell. Long before storytelling, children learn sequence through their hands: first the candle, then the singing; first we sweep, then we mop. Play with natural steps gives you dozens of chances to say these words at the exact moment your child feels the order happening — and a morning calendar turns the whole day into one big first-then game.
How to teach it — 4 simple steps

Narrate the steps as you play: 'FIRST we sweep… THEN we mop!' Make the order words the loudest in the sentence.

Ask tiny sequence questions: 'What do we do first?' Accept pointing or handing you the piece — that's a real answer.

Get the order wrong on purpose — candles before the cake, shoes before socks. Being corrected by a laughing child is deep learning.

Replay the sequence afterwards: 'First we made the cake, then we sang, then — all gone!' That little recap IS their first story.
