Why “ask & answer” matters
Real conversation is a gentle tennis match of questions and answers — and children need practice on both sides of the net. Answering 'who / what / where' questions builds comprehension; asking them builds confidence and curiosity. The trick is keeping it playful: quiz-style grilling shuts children down, but questions woven into games they already love make answering feel like winning.
How to teach it — 4 simple steps

Follow the 'one question, three comments' rule — comment and name things often, question occasionally. It keeps play fun, not a test.

Ask questions your child CAN answer first ('What's that?' about a favorite) — success makes them hungry for more.

Flip it: answer THEIR questions with delight, however they ask them. Children ask more when asking works.

Use books, cards and animal friends as question goldmines: 'Who's driving the digger? Who says moo?'
